Five stops to pair with Al Shindagha Museum

Al Seef waterfront #1
Bur Dubai bank of the Creek; free to walk Cafes and lantern-lit heritage lanes

Al Seef waterfront

A restored waterfront of coral-stone style buildings, wind towers and cafe tables along the Bur Dubai bank of the Creek. It is free to walk, it is a good place for lunch or coffee between museum visits, and it is lit well after dark. Our Old Dubai walk passes through it with a local guide.

The abra across the Creek #2
Bur Dubai to Deira; about AED 1-2 a crossing The cheapest boat ride in Dubai

The abra across the Creek

A traditional wooden abra carries passengers from the Bur Dubai bank to Deira for about AED 1-2, with dhows moored along the water and the Deira waterfront ahead. It takes only a few minutes, runs often and is the standard way to join the museums to the souks. Our Old Dubai walk includes one crossing.

Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood #3
Bur Dubai; where our Old Dubai walk starts Wind-tower lanes and a heritage house

Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood

Rows of restored coral-and-gypsum houses with barjeel wind towers, in the oldest quarter of Bur Dubai. Our walk meets here, near Sharaf DG Metro, and includes entry to a heritage house with old photos and artefacts. It is a different set of buildings from Al Shindagha, so the two museums do not overlap.

The Spice Souk in Deira #4
Deira, across the Creek Spices, dried limes and frankincense from open sacks

The Spice Souk in Deira

Open sacks of chillies, cinnamon bark and dried limes on the Deira bank, an easy next stop after the abra crossing. The museum's food and perfume houses explain where these ingredients and scents come from, and the souk is where you can smell them. Our Old Dubai walk stops here.

The Gold Souk #5
Deira; the last stop of our Old Dubai walk A covered arcade of jewellers, even if you only look

The Gold Souk

A timber-roofed arcade of jewellers in Deira, where the window displays are the show. It is where our Old Dubai walk ends, and Al Ras Metro station is a short walk away. It makes a fitting finish after the museum's jewellery house, which shows how Emirati women have worn gold and pearls through the generations.

Al Shindagha Museum in one minute

Al Shindagha Museum is a heritage museum of restored houses at the mouth of Dubai Creek, open daily from 10 AM to 8 PM, with adult entry listed at AED 50 for two houses. Children, people of determination and UAE seniors over 60 enter free. A quick visit of the best houses takes 1.5-2 hours, and a full one takes half a day.

It is the older chapter of the Dubai story. Before the city had a skyline it had a Creek, a pearl trade and a ruling family living on this peninsula, and the houses show how people lived, traded, cooked and dressed. If you want to understand where the Burj Khalifa came from, this is the stop.

Prices and hours come from the museum's published information and can change, so check the official Dubai Culture page before you go. Our ranking of the best museums in Dubai puts it next to the alternatives.

What is inside: the houses

The museum is not one building but a cluster of houses, each with a theme, joined by lanes and courtyards. These are the ones that matter most for a first visit.

From the museum's published information. Other houses cover crafts, beauty and adornment, jewellery, faith and the growth of the city.

If you only open two houses: our picks

Because the published adult price is for entry to two houses, you should decide what you want before you buy. Ask at the Welcome Centre what your ticket opens and what a fuller visit costs, as the museum has many houses and the answer may change.

  • First-time visitor: Dubai Creek: the birth of a city for the story, then the Perfume House for something you can smell.
  • Interested in the sea: the Creek house, then Culture of the Sea for the pearl trade and the dhows.
  • With children: Life on Land for the falcon's-eye film, then the Children's House.
  • Food lovers: the Creek house, then Traditional Food, where the exhibits invite you to taste.

In the Perfume House you can follow the way scented oils were made and what scent meant at home and in prayer. The Creek house is the one to give your best attention, since it explains why the rest of Bur Dubai and Deira are where they are.

Tickets, hours and the price question

Tickets are sold at the museum and online through the official site. The adult price of AED 50 is listed as entry to two houses, so it is cheap for a short visit and worth checking before a long one.

How to get there: Metro, ferry or car

The easiest route is the Metro. Al Ghubaiba station, on the Green Line, is opposite the Creek house, and you reach the Green Line from the Red Line by changing at BurJuman or Union. The Dubai Metro guide has the stations and fares. The museum also names the ferry, which stops at Al Ghubaiba station, and buses.

By car, there is parking along Al Khaleej Street, with City Centre Al Shindagha as the landmark to look for, and a valet service near the drop-off area. A taxi is the simplest option from a Downtown or Marina hotel.

Combining it with the abra, Al Seef and the souks

The museum fits neatly into a day in Old Dubai, and it is open until 8 PM, which makes it the natural afternoon half of the day. The Old Dubai guide has a half-day plan, and the Al Seef guide, Al Fahidi guide and abra guide cover the stops.

Our Old Dubai walking tour is the morning half. It is a shared group walk of 3-4 hours with a local guide, from $35 per person, or $55 with street-food tastings. It runs through Al Fahidi, Al Seef, an abra ride across the Creek, the Spice Souk and the Gold Souk, with Arabic coffee or tea, dates and water included and entry to a heritage house in Al Fahidi. It does not include entry to Al Shindagha Museum, so plan the museum for the afternoon, when you can book your own ticket. We agree the date on WhatsApp, and full prepayment confirms your place, with free cancellation or a date change up to 24 hours before the start.

Two other bridges are worth knowing. The museum's story of the sea and the desert continues with a camel ride and falcon photos on our full-day desert safari, from $45 per person. And for the opposite end of the story, a Burj Khalifa ticket from $55 per person shows how far the city has come. For the union story in between, see the Etihad Museum guide.

A day in Old Dubai: the walk in the morning, the museum later

Old Dubai works best as a two-part day, because the walk and the museum each take hours and the middle of the day is hot for much of the year. This is the order we suggest, with the museum last because it is open until 8 PM.

Part of the dayWhatNotes
MorningOld Dubai walking tour, 3-4 hoursAl Fahidi, Al Seef, abra, Spice Souk and Gold Souk; we confirm the start time for your date
MiddayLunch and a rest in Deira or at Al SeefEscape the heat; Al Ras station is a short walk from the Gold Souk
Late afternoonAl Shindagha Museum, 1.5-2 hoursLast entry is 7 PM, and the heat has dropped; Al Ghubaiba Metro station is opposite the Creek house
EveningThe Creek at dusk, or the Burj KhalifaA Creek-side stroll is free, and the Burj Khalifa shows the modern city

The walking tour does not include entry to Al Shindagha Museum; buy that ticket separately.

Heat, timing and who should skip it

Moving between the houses is partly outdoors, so the season matters. From November to March any hour is comfortable. From May to September, arrive after 4 PM, when the heat has dropped, and make use of the opening hours, since entry runs until 7 PM.

Bring water, a hat and sunglasses for the courtyards, and wear comfortable shoes, since the visit is mostly on foot. Dress as you would for any national museum, with shoulders and knees covered.

  • Go if you want the story of old Dubai, you like perfume, pearls or food history, or you want to pair a museum with a Creek walk.
  • Go with children who like hands-on rooms: they enter free, and the Children's House and the 4D theatre are built for them.
  • Skip it if your trip is under three days and your list is full of views and beaches.
  • Skip the middle of a summer day, when the walk between houses is the hard part. Go in the late afternoon instead.

FAQ

How much is entry to Al Shindagha Museum?

Adult entry is listed at AED 50, for entry to two houses. Groups pay AED 40 and students AED 20, while children, people of determination and UAE seniors over 60 enter free. Check the official site for what a ticket covers and for any change.

What are the Al Shindagha Museum opening hours?

Daily from 10 AM to 8 PM, with last entry at 7 PM. Hours can change on public holidays, so check before you go.

How long does Al Shindagha Museum take?

Allow 1.5-2 hours for the highlights: the Creek house, the Perfume House, Culture of the Sea and one more. Seeing every house takes about half a day.

How do I get to Al Shindagha Museum by Metro?

Take the Green Line to Al Ghubaiba station, which is opposite the museum's Creek house. From the Red Line, change at BurJuman or Union. The ferry also stops at Al Ghubaiba, and a taxi is the simplest option from most hotels.

What is the Perfume House at Al Shindagha Museum?

A house on traditional Emirati perfume: how scented oils and perfumes were made, the ingredients, and the role of scent at home and in religion. It is a short stop, often the most memorable one for visitors.

Is Al Shindagha Museum good for children?

Yes. Children enter free, there is a Children's House with hands-on exhibits and traditional games, and the Life on Land house has a 4D film with a falcon's-eye view. Moving between the houses is partly outdoors, so go in the late afternoon in summer.

Can I combine Al Shindagha Museum with the abra and the souks?

Yes. The abra crossing costs about AED 1-2, and the Spice and Gold Souks are on the Deira bank. Our 3-4 hour Old Dubai walk from $35 per person covers Al Fahidi, Al Seef, the abra and both souks, but not entry to this museum.

Is Al Shindagha Museum worth visiting?

Yes, if you want the story of old Dubai: the Creek, the pearl trade, perfume and food. It is less useful if you only want views and photographs, and in that case a Burj Khalifa slot or a boat tour will serve you better.
