Al Nassma camel milk chocolate

Kunafa, the dessert behind the bar

The crunch in Dubai chocolate comes from kunafa, the shredded-pastry dessert with cheese or cream and syrup, often topped with pistachio. Eating it fresh and warm shows you what the bar is copying. Our guide to Arabic desserts lists where to find it.

Dubai chocolate in short: what it is and where to buy it

The original Dubai chocolate is a milk chocolate bar from the Dubai brand FIX Dessert Chocolatier, filled with pistachio cream and crunchy kunafa pastry, and bars start at AED 68.25, about $18.60, according to Careem. FIX has no ordinary shop. Careem said last October that FIX is sold only through Careem Quik, with a pop-up at Dubai International Airport as its only other retail presence. Gulf News reported that the pop-up is in Terminal 3, Concourse B East, run with Dubai Duty Free.

Those channels were true when announced, and we could not confirm them for November, so check the Careem app and the airport before you plan around them. If you only want the taste, Bateel sells its own pistachio kunafa bar for $19 on its website, and many supermarkets and gift shops sell copies of the style. This guide shows how to tell a good copy from a poor one.

Where the bar comes from

Dubai chocolate takes the crisp shredded pastry and pistachio of kunafa, a Middle Eastern dessert, and puts them inside a milk chocolate bar. Press coverage describes FIX as a Dubai-born brand started by a British-Egyptian founder about five years ago, and the bar spread on social media and is now copied by makers in many countries. We could not read FIX's own website, so treat the origin story as press reporting, not as the brand's statement.

Because the bar became so popular, the name Dubai chocolate is now a style name, used by makers in many countries. A bar with that name may be made in Dubai or anywhere else. That is not a problem if you want the taste, but it matters if you want the original. Our guide to Arabic desserts explains the kunafa behind it, and our souvenir guide puts the bar next to dates, camel milk chocolate and spices.

What Dubai chocolate costs

Careem's post gave AED 68.25 as the starting price for a FIX bar, which is about $18.60 at the fixed rate of 3.6725. Bateel's website showed $19 for each 120 g Dubai Chocolate bar, about AED 70, and $24 for the 225 g Dubai Date Chocolate, about AED 88. Bateel's page was in dollars when we read it, so the dirham figures are our conversion. Prices change, so check before you buy.

A bar of this size is a treat or a gift, not a snack to buy in bulk. If you are buying for several people, dates by weight in a souk cost less per gift; see our guide to dates. Cheaper bars from other makers exist and can be good, but they are not FIX, so do not pay FIX prices for a bar with no maker's name.

Fakes and weak copies: how to check

Most Dubai chocolate on shelves is a copy by another maker, not a counterfeit, and a copy can be good. The real risks are a bar sold as FIX that is not, a bar with no clear maker, and an old bar that has melted in the heat. These checks help:

  • Buy from the channels above. A seller on social media or a messaging app who asks for payment in advance is a risk; our guide to common tourist scams covers it.
  • Read the label. It should name the maker and address, list the ingredients and show production and expiry dates. A bar with no maker's name is a poor buy at any price.
  • Look at the ingredients. Pistachio, shredded kunafa pastry and milk chocolate are the core. Bateel says its bars use no compound chocolate; ask other sellers what the chocolate is.
  • Check the seal and the surface. A broken seal, a white film or a bar that has clearly melted and set again has been stored badly.
  • Be careful with prices far below the original, and compare the weight of the bar, not just the price.

Souvenir tips: heat, allergies and customs

Chocolate melts in summer, and a bar left in a hot car or a suitcase in the hold can arrive as a mess. Carry it in your cabin bag, keep it in the hotel fridge until you leave, and buy it on the way to the airport if you can. Our Dubai Duty Free guide covers the airport shops, where a last-minute bar is easy to buy.

Allergies matter. Bateel lists kunafa pastry made from shredded wheat dough, pistachio paste or hazelnut praline, and milk chocolate, so a typical bar contains nuts, milk and wheat. Read each label, because other makers may use sesame or other ingredients. Chocolate is normally fine to take home when sealed, but your own country sets the customs rules for food, so check them before you pack.

Taste first, then buy: a food walk in Old Dubai

If you want to taste Emirati sweets rather than only buy them, our Old Dubai walking tour includes Arabic coffee and dates from $35, and the $55 option adds street-food tastings. Ask us on WhatsApp what the tastings include on your date. For a longer list of local dishes, see Emirati food in Dubai.

FAQ

How much does Dubai chocolate cost in Dubai?

Careem gave AED 68.25, about $18.60, as the starting price for a FIX bar. Bateel's website showed $19 for a 120 g Dubai Chocolate bar, about AED 70. Prices change, and other makers' bars can cost less, so check before you buy.

Where can I buy the original FIX Dubai chocolate?

Careem said last October that FIX is sold only through Careem Quik, and Gulf News reported a FIX pop-up at Dubai Duty Free in Terminal 3, Concourse B East. We could not confirm either for November, so check the Careem app and the airport before you rely on them.

Is Dubai chocolate only made in Dubai?

No. The name is now used by makers in many countries, so a bar called Dubai chocolate may be made anywhere. FIX and Bateel are brands that sell in Dubai. Read the label for the maker and the country of production if the origin matters to you.

How can I tell if Dubai chocolate is fake?

Buy from the channels the brand names itself, and check the label for the maker, ingredients and dates. Be careful with social media sellers who want payment in advance, bars with no maker's name, broken seals and prices far below the original.

Can I take Dubai chocolate home on a plane?

Normally yes, when it is sealed, but your own country sets the customs rules for food, so check them. Carry the chocolate in your cabin bag, not in the hold, because heat can melt it. In hot months keep it in a hotel fridge until you leave.

Does Dubai chocolate contain nuts or gluten?

Typically it contains pistachio or other nuts, milk and wheat, because the kunafa pastry is made from shredded wheat dough, according to Bateel's own description. Other makers may add sesame or other ingredients, so read each label. Ask the seller if you have an allergy.

Is Dubai chocolate worth buying as a souvenir?

Yes if you like pistachio and want a light, edible gift that is easy to pack. Dates by weight cost less per gift, and camel milk chocolate is a different Dubai treat. Buy a few bars, carry them in your cabin bag and check each label.
