Most Dubai desert safaris are not overnight. They are evening programmes of 6-7 hours that return you to your hotel the same night; our full-day safari takes 7 hours and costs from $45 per person. A real overnight means a desert resort, such as Al Maha or Bab Al Shams, or a camp, for example around Mleiha in Sharjah, and it costs well above an evening safari. Below: how the options compare, what a night in the dunes is like, who should choose which, and the questions to ask any camp.

Can you stay overnight on a desert safari in Dubai?
A standard safari does not: ours takes 7 hours and returns you to your hotel the same night, from $45 per person. To sleep in the desert you book a camp or a desert resort, which is a separate product with its own price and rules.

Five ways to spend a night (or an evening) in the desert
#1
Our evening safari: dunes, sunset, camp and your own bed
The programme is the point: 30-45 minutes of dune bashing, sandboarding, a camel ride, sunset, then a BBQ dinner with fire, Tanoura and belly dance shows in air-conditioned tents at Al Khayma camp, and a drive back to your hotel. It runs from $45 per person ($65 with a 30-minute quad bike ride), and you pay on the day with no prepayment. It is not an overnight stay.
#2
A desert resort: Al Maha and Bab Al Shams
A bed in the sand without sleeping on it: real rooms or suites, air conditioning, private bathrooms and meals, and at Al Maha the setting is the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve, home to Arabian oryx. It is the most comfortable overnight and priced as a luxury stay, so compare per-night rates directly with the resort. Transfers, activities and dinner are often extra; ask what is included before you book.
#3
A camp or glamping stay around Mleiha, Sharjah
Fossil Rock stands above the dunes here, and the area is known for camps with night programmes and a darker sky than Dubai's. Standards vary from simple tents to glamping, so ask whether the tent is air-conditioned, whether the bathroom is private and what dinner and breakfast include. We do not book these camps; check current offers directly with the operator.
#4
The evening quad safari: the active version
A full hour on a self-drive quad is part of the price, from $70 per person on a bike shared by two ($105 for your own quad), followed by sandboarding, a camel ride, sunset and the camp evening with a live BBQ buffet. It also ends at your hotel the same night. Age limits and indemnity rules apply to quad riders, so check the quad biking guide first.
#5
The sunrise balloon: the desert at first light
If what you want from a night in the desert is the dawn, the balloon gives you that with a bed to go back to. A pre-dawn pickup, a 40-70 minute flight at 2,000-4,000 feet, then a Bedouin-style breakfast, camel ride and falcon photo, and 4-5 hours door to door. It is from $275 per person, with a 30% deposit, and it sells out one to two weeks ahead.
Overnight desert safari in Dubai: the short answer
A typical Dubai desert safari is not overnight. It is an afternoon-to-evening programme of about 6-7 hours that picks you up at your hotel and brings you back the same night. Our full-day desert safari is 7 hours from $45 per person, with dune bashing, sandboarding, a camel ride, sunset, a BBQ dinner and shows. None of the tours on this site includes an overnight stay.
If you want to sleep in the desert, you book a desert resort or a camp, and that is a separate product with its own price, comfort level and season. It suits some travellers very well, but for most visitors the evening safari gives most of the desert for far less money and a bed you already know. The table compares them honestly.
Evening safari, overnight camp or desert resort
We only know our own programme in detail, so the overnight columns are the questions to ask rather than promises. Prices for overnight stays vary by operator and season; check them directly.
| Our evening safari | Overnight camp | Desert resort | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Time away from your hotel | About 7 hours | From the afternoon to the next morning | One or more nights |

| Best season | All year; the camp tents are air-conditioned | November to March | All year, with the pool and air conditioning |
The overnight columns describe typical options; each operator differs, so confirm the details when you book.

What our evening safari includes, and what it does not
The full-day desert safari picks you up at your hotel in Dubai, Sharjah or Ajman in an air-conditioned 4x4 with a licensed English-speaking driver-guide. It takes you to the Lahbab Red Dunes for 30-45 minutes of dune bashing, then sandboarding and a camel ride as the light turns gold. The evening is at Al Khayma camp: a BBQ buffet with vegetarian and gluten-free options, unlimited water, soft drinks, tea and Arabic coffee, henna, a fire show, Tanoura dance and belly dance in air-conditioned tents, then the drive back.
You agree the date on WhatsApp and pay on the day; there is no prepayment. The quad bike option is $65 in all and the VIP buggy option is $240 per person. It is not recommended for pregnant women, people with back or heart problems, or infants under 3. During Ramadan, entertainment and alcohol service may be limited. What it is not: a place to sleep, or a stargazing trip; the camp is lit, and you return to Dubai that night. For the timing question, see morning or evening safari.
A night in the desert: what to expect
Every camp runs differently, but the shape of an overnight is similar. The table is the typical day, not a promise.
| Time | What happens |
|---|---|
| Mid-afternoon | Arrive, settle into the tent, and have tea or coffee |
| Late afternoon | Activities if offered: dune driving, sandboarding or a camel ride |
| Sunset | The best light of the day, with the dunes turning gold |
| Evening | Dinner at the camp, a fire, music or a show, then the sky |
| Night | Sleep in a tent; expect camp noise until late and a cool or cold night in winter |
| Sunrise | In winter, about 6:30-7:00 AM; the light wakes most people, and the dunes are at their best |
| Morning | Breakfast and a transfer back, often by mid-morning |
Times are typical for the cool months; check your camp's schedule.
The weather decides whether this is pleasant. From November to March nights are cool, and in the open desert they can fall to about 10°C or lower in December and January, so you need warm layers even though the days are mild. In summer, nights stay near 30°C or more and an overnight under canvas becomes a poor idea; the summer safari guide explains why the evening version with air-conditioned tents works instead. Bring warm clothing, a torch, sunscreen for the morning and closed shoes, and shake out your shoes before putting them on, as scorpions and beetles use them for shelter.
Where you can sleep in the desert near Dubai
The options sort into three groups, and we mention them as pointers only; check current offers and prices with each operator.
- Desert resorts in the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve and nearby. Al Maha and Bab Al Shams are the best known: real rooms, air conditioning, meals and a quiet reserve. These are the most comfortable and most expensive option.
- Camps and glamping around Mleiha, Sharjah. A drive of roughly an hour, with Fossil Rock nearby and a reputation for darker skies and night programmes.
- Liwa and the Empty Quarter in Abu Dhabi. The biggest dunes in the region, several hours' drive away, for a longer trip rather than a night out.
What not to do is camp wherever you like. Camping in Dubai is regulated and generally limited to designated areas, and the desert around Dubai includes protected reserves, so you cannot simply pitch a tent beside the road. Check with the relevant municipality or the operator before you plan anything on your own.
Who should choose which
A short rule of thumb, with the honest exceptions:
- Families with young children: the evening safari, then your own bed. Bedtime, cold nights, camp noise and insects make an overnight hard work; see the safari with kids guide.
- Couples and honeymooners: a desert resort or the sunrise balloon is more romantic than a basic tent.
- Seniors and anyone with back problems: a hotel bed beats a camp mattress; see the seniors guide.
- Photographers and stargazers: an overnight at a dark site, or a separate stargazing night.
- Budget travellers and first-timers: the evening safari, from $45.
- Visitors in summer: the evening safari only; skip the overnight until November.
Questions to ask any overnight camp
If you decide to sleep in the desert, a few questions separate a good night from a poor one:
- Is the tent air-conditioned and heated? Winter nights are cold; summer nights are hot.
- Is the bathroom private or shared, and how far is it from the tent?
- What is included: dinner, breakfast, drinks, activities and transfers?
- How many guests share the camp, and is there music late at night?
- What is the cancellation rule if there is a sandstorm or unsafe weather?
- What time is check-in and check-out, and is there a separate rule for children?
- Is there mobile signal, a first-aid kit and a clear emergency plan?
Sunrise instead of a sleepover
If what you want from a night in the desert is the dawn, the sunrise balloon gives you the desert at first light and your own bed afterwards. A pre-dawn hotel pickup, a 40-70 minute flight over the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve with gazelles, oryx and camels below, then a Bedouin-style breakfast, a camel ride and a falcon photo, and about 4-5 hours door to door. It is from $275 per person, a 30% deposit confirms it, and the baskets sell out one to two weeks ahead. It is not suitable for children under 7. Desert safari or balloon compares the two.
If you would rather drive, the evening quad bike safari gives you 60 minutes on a self-drive quad, from $70 per person on a bike shared by two, and still ends at your hotel. The Lahbab Red Dunes guide shows where both safaris go, and what to wear covers the clothes for any of them.
FAQ
Can you stay overnight on a desert safari in Dubai?
A standard safari does not: ours takes 7 hours and returns you to your hotel the same night, from $45 per person. To sleep in the desert you book a camp or a desert resort, which is a separate product with its own price and rules.
How much does an overnight desert camp cost?
There is no single price. Camps and resorts set their own rates by tent type, season and what is included, and they are usually well above an evening safari, which for comparison starts at $45 per person with transfers and dinner. Ask each operator what the price covers.
Is camping in the Dubai desert allowed?
Only in designated areas and with the right arrangements. The desert around Dubai includes protected reserves, so do not pitch a tent wherever you like; check with the municipality or the operator, and follow the official rules.
What is the best time for an overnight in the desert?
November to March, when nights are cool. From May to September nights stay near 30°C or more and an overnight in a tent is hard going; the air-conditioned evening safari is the better summer choice.
Is it cold in the desert at night?
In winter, yes. In the open desert, nights can fall to about 10°C or lower in December and January, so bring a warm layer even if the day was mild.
Do overnight camps include dune bashing?
Some do and some do not, so ask. Our evening safari includes 30-45 minutes of dune bashing on the Red Dunes, sandboarding and a camel ride, then returns you to your hotel.
Is an overnight desert stay suitable for children?
It can be hard work: cold winter nights, camp noise, insects and an unfamiliar bed. Most families find the evening safari and their own hotel bed easier. Whatever you choose, check each operator's age rules.
Can I see the stars on a normal desert safari?
You may notice some, but the camp is lit and the programme is the point. For a proper look at the sky, plan a separate stargazing night; our stargazing guide covers sites, moon phase and season.
