Quad Bike or Dune Buggy in Dubai: Which One to Ride

Quad bike versus dune buggy in the Dubai desert: 400cc open quads at $65 with the full safari, or 1000cc-class buggies with a roll cage at $240. Thrill, safety, price and who each machine suits.

Full-Day Desert Safari in Dubai — From $45 per person

Stand in the Lahbab Red Dunes and there are two machines to choose from: the open quad bike, where you sit on top and lean into every turn, and the caged dune buggy, a two-seat rally car with a harness and a roll cage. Both get the heart rate up; they are completely different animals. The quad is raw, physical and yours alone — a 400cc-class bike for $65, with the whole safari, dinner and shows included in that price. The buggy is the professional machine — 1000cc-class Can-Am Mavericks and similar, faster, more stable, able to climb the highest dunes — for $240, again with the whole day around it. This guide is the no-filter comparison: thrill, safety, price and the honest answer to who should book which.

Which is better in Dubai, a quad bike or a dune buggy?

The quad bike for the raw, solo ride and the value — $65 with the whole safari, dinner and shows included. The dune buggy for speed, the highest dunes and a roll cage around you — $240 with the same day included. Most of our guests book the quad; the buggy is the deliberate premium.

Quad, buggy and what you get anyway

The quad bike #1
$65, safari and dinner included The solo rider who wants to feel every bump

The quad bike

A 400cc-class machine you ride alone: you feel the sand, you lean your body into the turns, you get dusty and hooked. Thirty minutes before the camp, no driving licence needed, under-16s with an adult. For $20 over the classic safari it is the best value on the dunes and our most booked option. For a full hour on a quad, the Evening Quad Bike Safari is $70 per person on a bike shared by two or $105 on your own.

The dune buggy #2
$240, safari and dinner included Speed, the tallest dunes and the best video

The dune buggy

A professional off-road machine: 1000cc-class buggies with a four-point harness and a roll cage, built to climb dunes a quad cannot and to do it at speed with the stability of four wide wheels. Two seats, so a couple rides together. Safer than it looks, faster than it sounds, and a deliberate premium.

The 4x4 dune bashing you get either way #3
Included at every price Everyone in the car

The 4x4 dune bashing you get either way

Before any self-driving, the safari itself is 30-45 minutes of dune bashing in a 4x4 with a licensed driver who sets the intensity for the group. If you are not sure you want to drive at all, this is already the thrill ride — the quad and the buggy are extra time on the sand, not a replacement.

Sandboarding, the free one #4
Included The adrenaline without an engine

Sandboarding, the free one

The Big Red dunes are steep enough to surf, and the board is part of every safari. It is the one activity that costs nothing extra, works for children, and photographs as well as the machines.

Quad bike or buggy: the short answer

Take the quad bike if you want to ride, not sit — it is the solo, physical, dusty experience, and at $65 for the bike plus the entire safari it is the best deal in the desert and the version most of our guests book. Take the dune buggy if you want speed, the tallest dunes and a roll cage around you, and you are happy that $240 buys a machine rather than a second day out. It is the premium choice by design.

Both are 30-minute sessions added to the same Full-Day Desert Safari before the camp, so the dune bashing, sandboarding, camel ride, BBQ dinner and shows are the same whichever you pick.

The quad bike: raw and yours alone

If you grew up wanting to be a stunt rider, this is your machine. A quad is open: you sit on it, not in it, and you steer with your body as much as the handlebars. You feel every bump, lean into the turns, and come back covered in sand. It is the ultimate solo experience on the dunes — total control of a 400cc-class machine for 30 minutes. If you want longer, the Evening Quad Bike Safari gives a full hour on a self-drive quad, $70 per person on a bike shared by two or $105 on your own.

The economics are the reason it sells: $65 buys the quad session and everything else in the day — the 4x4 dune bashing, sandboarding, the camel ride, the BBQ buffet and the shows. Hotel tour desks quote far more for a basic quad session on its own. No official driving licence is required in the designated riding area; children under 16 ride accompanied by an adult, and the guide's briefing is not optional.

The dune buggy: the desert predator

This is not a toy. The buggies are 1000cc-class machines — Can-Am Mavericks and similar — with a four-point harness and a roll cage, which is why they can attack dunes a quad has to go around. Think of a rally car with the suspension to fly over the crests and the stability of a tank on the way down. Two seats, so a couple or a parent and teenager ride together.

It is safer than a quad in the ways that matter — you are strapped in, you are caged, four wide wheels keep you planted — and it is faster in every way. It also looks the part on video. At $240 per person it is a premium play; the honest buyer is the person who came for exactly this.

Safety: what is actually different

On a quad the machine is under you and nothing is around you, which is the thrill and the risk: you wear a helmet, you follow the guide, you ride the marked area. In a buggy you are inside a cage with a harness, which is why the buggy is the faster of the two and still the calmer one to watch from the outside. Neither needs a driving licence in the designated riding area, both are taken at your own risk, and on both the guide's instructions are the rule.

The general safari limits apply before you get near either: not recommended for pregnant women, people with back or heart problems, or infants under three. Under-16s ride the quad with an adult alongside.

If you are not sure you want to drive at all

Then book the $45 classic and let the driver do it. The 4x4 dune bashing is already 30-45 minutes of the Big Red dunes at an intensity the driver adjusts to the car, sandboarding is included, and the evening at Al Khayma — BBQ buffet, fire show, Tanoura, belly dance — is the same at every price. The quad and the buggy are extra time on the sand, not the reason the day exists.

One practical note for anyone adding a machine: skip the heavy meal two to three hours before pickup, and if you get carsick, take a tablet 30 minutes before the 4x4 arrives. The self-drive session comes after the dune bashing, not instead of it.

FAQ

Which is better in Dubai, a quad bike or a dune buggy?

The quad bike for the raw, solo ride and the value — $65 with the whole safari, dinner and shows included. The dune buggy for speed, the highest dunes and a roll cage around you — $240 with the same day included. Most of our guests book the quad; the buggy is the deliberate premium.

How much is a quad bike in the Dubai desert?

With us, $65 per person, and that price includes the entire full-day safari: 4x4 dune bashing, sandboarding, the camel ride, the BBQ buffet and the shows, plus a 30-minute quad session before the camp.

How much is a dune buggy in Dubai?

$240 per person for a 30-minute session in a 1000cc-class buggy with a roll cage and harness, with the full-day safari — dune bashing, camel ride, dinner and shows — included in the price.

Do I need a licence to drive a quad bike or buggy in Dubai?

No official driving licence is required in the designated riding area. You follow the guide's safety briefing, ride at your own risk, and children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.

Is a dune buggy safer than a quad bike?

In the ways that matter, yes: you are strapped into a four-point harness inside a roll cage, on four wide wheels. A quad is an open machine you ride on top of, which is the thrill and the reason to follow the briefing closely.

Can two people share a dune buggy?

Yes — the buggies are two-seaters, so a couple or a parent and teenager ride side by side. On the full-day safari the quad is a single-rider machine; the Evening Quad Bike Safari gives a full hour on a self-drive quad, $70 per person on a bike shared by two or $105 on your own.

Is the quad or buggy session instead of the dune bashing?

No. The 4x4 dune bashing, sandboarding, camel ride, dinner and shows are part of every safari. The quad and buggy are 30-minute self-drive sessions added before the camp.
