Gold is not always cheaper in Dubai: the metal follows the world price, so any saving comes from tax, duty and the making charge. On 2 November 2026 Gulf News listed 22K at AED 435.00 a gram, about $118. This guide works through a 10 g chain at that rate with a making charge and 5% VAT, shows how to compare it with your home price and explains the VAT refund and the declaration limit for carrying gold out.

Is gold cheaper in Dubai than at home?
Sometimes. The metal follows the world price, so the saving depends on the tax, duty and making charge at home. On 2 November 2026, 22K was AED 435.00 a gram (about $118) per Gulf News, before the making charge and 5% VAT. Compare the all-in price per gram, including any duty at home.

Three places to buy gold in Dubai
#1
The Gold Souk, Deira
A covered arcade of jewellers' windows. A Gulf News guide describes more than 300 retailers, open 10 AM-10 PM with some shops closing from 1 to 4 PM. The rate is the same everywhere that day, so compare the all-in price per gram at two or three windows and negotiate only the making charge.
#2
Jewellers in the big malls
Mall jewellers normally work with printed tag prices, in air-conditioned shops. There is little to bargain over, but a tag is a useful benchmark to take back to the souk. Ask for the weight, karat and the making charge to be written on the invoice, and ask whether the shop takes part in the VAT refund.
#3
Jewellers in Souk Madinat Jumeirah
The souk's online directory lists at least ten jewellery shops, among them Agra Diamond and Jewellery and Eva Gems and Jewelry. Prices are mostly fixed, so this suits buyers who dislike bargaining. Expect to pay for the setting. Compare the all-in price per gram with the Gold Souk before you decide.
Is gold cheaper in Dubai? The short answer
Sometimes, but not always. The metal follows the world gold price, so Dubai is cheaper only when your home price carries more tax, duty or retail margin than Dubai's 5% VAT and making charge. The saving is in those extras, not in the gold.
On 2 November 2026 Gulf News listed 22K gold at AED 435.00 a gram, about $118 at the fixed rate of AED 3.6725 to the dollar. A shop adds a making charge for labour and design, and then 5% VAT. The price you pay per gram is therefore higher than the rate, and the question is whether it is lower than the all-in price at home.
Dubai's real advantages are choice, competition between many shops and a wide range of 22K designs. A Gulf News guide to the old souks calls Gold Souk prices some of the most competitive in the world, which is an opinion, not a promise. Nobody should book a flight for gold; if you are going to Dubai anyway, a careful comparison is worth an hour. This guide is about jewellery for wear and gifts, not investment advice.
What gold cost per gram on 2 November 2026
Gulf News publishes UAE gold rates for each karat three times a day. This table shows the morning and evening figures for 2 November 2026, with the dollar value of the evening rate.
| Karat | Purity | Morning (AED a gram) | Evening (AED a gram) | Evening in dollars |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 24K | About 99.9% | 470.25 | 469.75 | About $127.91 |
| 22K | About 91.6% | 435.50 | 435.00 | About $118.45 |
| 21K | 87.5% | 417.50 | 417.25 | About $113.61 |
| 18K | 75% | 358.00 | 357.50 | About $97.35 |
Source: Gulf News UAE gold rates page, 2 November 2026. Rates change through the day, so check the figure on the day you shop. Dollars at AED 3.6725 = $1.
The rate moves during the day: on 2 November the 22K rate fell by AED 0.50 a gram between morning and afternoon, which is AED 5 on a 10 g chain. That is why the day's rate is not where you save. The Gulf News page is a market reference, and a shop may quote a slightly different figure, so if a quote for 22K is far from the published rate on the day, ask why.
A worked example: a 10 g 22K chain at the 2 November rate
Every quote has the same parts: the weight times the day's rate, a making charge and 5% VAT. We use the evening rate of AED 435.00 for 22K. The making charge is the part you negotiate. Our Gold Souk guide says plain machine-made chains are commonly quoted at a few percent up to about 12%, so the table shows 5% and 10%.
| Step | Making charge 5% | Making charge 10% |
|---|---|---|
| Gold: 10 g x AED 435.00 | AED 4,350.00 | AED 4,350.00 |
| Making charge | AED 217.50 | AED 435.00 |
| Subtotal | AED 4,567.50 | AED 4,785.00 |
| VAT at 5% | AED 228.38 | AED 239.25 |
| Total | AED 4,795.88 | AED 5,024.25 |
| Total in dollars | About $1,306 | About $1,368 |
| All-in price per gram | AED 479.59 ($130.59) | AED 502.43 ($136.81) |
Example only. The making charges are assumptions, not quotes. The rate is the 22K evening rate from Gulf News on 2 November 2026.
The gap between the two columns is about AED 228 on one 10 g chain, and that is the whole value of negotiating the making charge. The rate, the weight and the VAT do not move. The steps for buying, hallmarks and invoices are in the Gold Souk guide.
How to check your own saving in five steps
Gold at home is priced in your own currency and your own tax rules, so the only way to know is to compare the same thing on both sides. This is the order we suggest:
- Find your home price per gram. Use the same karat and a similar piece, with all taxes included, in your own currency. A price tag divided by the weight gives the figure.
- Work out the Dubai all-in price per gram. Take the total with the making charge and VAT, and divide by the weight. Convert at AED 3.6725 to the dollar; for other currencies use a currency app.
- Add what your country charges when you bring the piece home. Some countries charge duty or tax above an allowance and some do not, so read your customs rules before you buy.
- Subtract the VAT refund if you will claim it. The operator keeps a fee, so you get back less than the full 5%.
- Compare the two totals per gram. Count the cost of the trip only if the trip is for the gold.
| Duty at home (example) | Dubai price per gram with a 5% making charge | Dubai price per gram with a 10% making charge |
|---|---|---|
| None | $130.59 | $136.81 |
| 5% | $137.12 | $143.65 |
| 10% | $143.65 | $150.49 |
Prices per gram are for 22K gold at the 2 November 2026 evening rate, before any VAT refund.
The table above shows how a duty at home changes the result for the chain. The duty rates are examples to show the arithmetic, not any country's rate. If your home price per gram is higher than the Dubai figure in the row that matches your country, Dubai is cheaper for you.
The VAT refund on gold: what to expect
Visitors who live outside the UAE can claim back part of the 5% VAT on goods from shops in the Tourist Refund Scheme, when one tax invoice is AED 250 or more and the goods leave the UAE within 90 days. On the 5% making-charge chain above, the VAT inside the invoice is AED 228.38, about $62, before the operator's fee is taken off.
That is worth claiming, but it does not decide the price. Some jewellers take part and many small shops do not, so ask before you bargain. Show your passport at the till and keep the form, the invoice and the piece in your hand luggage, in case customs asks to see them. Our VAT refund guide covers the steps and the airport kiosks. Check the current rules on the Federal Tax Authority's page before you go.
Leaving with gold: the declaration limit and your home customs
The UAE government's customs page says that passengers entering or leaving with more than AED 60,000 in cash, financial instruments, precious metals or valuable stones must declare it to the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Ports Security, on its website or in the Afseh app. A few pieces of jewellery are well below that. A very large purchase, or one carried together with cash, is where it matters, so check how the total is counted on the official page before you travel.
Your home country sets its own rules and allowances for gold you bring in, so read them before you buy and keep the invoice. Our money in Dubai guide explains cards, cash and the cash limit.
Tips for buying gold in Dubai
These are the habits that save money and avoid trouble:
- Check the published rate first. A look at the day's rate before you walk into a shop shows you quickly whether a quote is out of line.
- Ask for the quote in four parts. Weight, rate, making charge and VAT, in writing, so that you can compare shops.
- Compare the all-in price per gram. A low making charge can come with a higher rate, so do not judge a shop by one number.
- Pick the karat for the use. 22K is the usual choice for jewellery and gifts, and 18K or 21K wear harder. The Gold Souk guide explains the differences.
- Choose plain pieces for the lowest making charge. Handmade and stone-set pieces cost more.
- Keep the invoice. It should show the weight, karat, rate, making charge and VAT, and you need it for repairs, any refund and customs.
- Skip street offers. Do not buy loose gold or cheap copies from touts.
For gifts that cost far less than gold, see what to buy in Dubai. If you prefer printed prices, the jewellers in Souk Madinat Jumeirah are an option, and our Dubai souks guide compares all the markets.
See the Gold Souk with a guide first
Our Old Dubai walking tour ends at the Gold Souk. It is a shared group walk of 3-4 hours with an English-speaking local guide, from $35 per person, or $55 with street-food tastings. It crosses the Creek by abra and passes the Spice Souk, so you learn the layout before you spend. It is not a shopping tour, and you can come back to the windows you liked.
Full prepayment confirms your place, and cancellation or a date change is free up to 24 hours before the start. The walk is mostly outdoors, so wear comfortable shoes and light clothes; May to September is very hot. If your evening is free, the full-day desert safari, from $45, collects you from your hotel and is paid on the day with no prepayment.
