Take the full-day tour if the mosque is one stop of a capital day, take a taxi if it is the only stop and money is not the question, and take the bus only if you have a whole day to spend on the road. Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque sits on the edge of Abu Dhabi, about 1.5-2 hours from a Dubai hotel by car, and the transport is the smaller half of the problem: entry is free, but you register in advance, and the dress code turns people away at the gate every day. This guide compares the three ways to get there on cost, time and what you actually see, then covers the rules that matter once you arrive. We run the Abu Dhabi day from Dubai most mornings, so the numbers are the ones we work with.

What is the cheapest way to get from Dubai to Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque?
The public bus: the E100 from Al Ghubaiba or the E101 from Ibn Battuta to the Abu Dhabi bus station, then a 30-minute taxi to the mosque. About $25 per person all in, and about five hours of the day spent on the road.

The ways from Dubai, ranked
#1
Full-day tour from Dubai
Hotel pickup at 8:00 AM, a 40-minute stop at the mosque with the registration handled, then BAPS Hindu Mandir, the Corniche, Emirates Palace, Heritage Village and a Ferrari World photo stop before the drive back. For the price of one taxi leg you get the whole day, an English-speaking guide and an air-conditioned car.
#2
Taxi or ride-hailing
Fast and comfortable: about 1.5 hours door to door from central Dubai. The catch is the bill — $70-90 one way, so around $150-180 for the round trip — and it buys one location. Finding a taxi back from the mosque is easy; finding one at a fair price after a long queue is less so.
#3
Public bus E100 or E101
The E100 leaves from Al Ghubaiba and the E101 from Ibn Battuta; both take around two hours to the Abu Dhabi bus station, and from there it is another 30 minutes by taxi to the mosque. Budget about $25 per person all in and about five hours of the day on transport.
#4
Private VIP car
The same Abu Dhabi day as the shared tour, in your own car with a flexible schedule: longer at the mosque, lunch where you choose, an earlier return for tired children. Split between four people it costs about the same as the taxi, and it includes the guide.
Which way should you get to the Grand Mosque?
For most visitors the answer is the full-day tour: from $45 per person it covers the transport, the guide and the mosque registration, and it turns a 3-4 hour round trip into a day that also includes BAPS Hindu Mandir, the Corniche and Heritage Village. Our Abu Dhabi City Tour from Dubai picks up at 8:00 AM and reaches the mosque before the midday heat and the heaviest crowds.
A taxi makes sense when the mosque is the one thing you want and the day is short: 1.5 hours each way, $70-90 each way, no waiting for anybody. The bus makes sense only if the budget is the whole point — it is the cheapest way and by far the longest.
Whichever you pick, the transport is the easy half. What actually decides the visit is the dress code and the registration, and those are covered below before the routes.
The dress code turns people away before anything else
Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is a working mosque, and the dress code is enforced at the entrance without exceptions. Women need loose clothing that covers to the ankles and wrists, plus a headscarf. Men need long trousers and a shirt with sleeves — no shorts, no sleeveless tops. Tight or transparent fabrics fail the check even if they cover everything.
Arrive dressed for it rather than counting on borrowing something at the gate: people who fail the check end up buying an abaya at the mall nearby, which costs more than the taxi did. Bring your own scarf — it also photographs better than a borrowed one. On our tour the guide checks outfits in the car before the mosque, which is why our groups do not lose time at the entrance.
- Women: ankles and wrists covered, loose fit, headscarf on.
- Men: long trousers, sleeves — no shorts, no vests.
- Shoes come off in the prayer halls; slip-ons make it painless.
- Smartphone photos are fine; professional cameras and tripods need a permit.
By public bus: E100 and E101
Two intercity buses link Dubai and Abu Dhabi: the E100 from Al Ghubaiba bus station near the Creek and the E101 from Ibn Battuta in the south of the city. Either takes about two hours to the main bus station in Abu Dhabi, and the ticket is roughly $10-15.
The bus does not go to the mosque. From the station you take a taxi for the last stretch, about 30 minutes, and you do the same in reverse on the way back. Counting the connections at both ends, the bus turns the visit into roughly five hours of commuting for a couple of hours at the mosque — fine for a traveller with a free day and a tight budget, exhausting for anyone else.
By taxi or ride-hailing: fastest, and the most expensive
A taxi from Dubai Marina or Downtown to the mosque takes around 1.5 hours and costs $70-90 one way, so plan on $150-180 for the round trip. It is the quickest door-to-door option and the most comfortable after a late night, and it buys exactly one location.
Two practical notes. Agree the pickup point at the mosque for the return before you let the car go, because the taxi rank gets long in the late afternoon. And if you are two or more people, compare the round-trip fare with the private car below — for a group the numbers cross quickly.
With the full-day tour: what the $45 covers
The shared Abu Dhabi City Tour starts with an 8:00 AM hotel pickup in Dubai, Sharjah or Ajman in an air-conditioned vehicle; guests in Sharjah and remote parts of Dubai are collected first, so their pickup is earlier. The drive to Abu Dhabi takes 1.5-2 hours, and the mosque is the first stop — a 40-minute visit with the registration assistance included, timed before the heat and the crowds.
After the mosque the day continues to BAPS Hindu Mandir, the Corniche and Emirates Palace, Heritage Village and Yas Island with a Ferrari World photo stop and an optional lunch at Yas Mall, then the Dates Market before the return. A private VIP car for up to 7 people is $245 with a flexible schedule. Entry tickets to Ferrari World are not included; the tour covers the free-entry sites.
- Round-trip transfer from your Dubai hotel, shared or private.
- Professional licensed guide, English-speaking.
- Entrance to the Grand Mosque with registration assistance.
- Visits to BAPS Hindu Mandir and Heritage Village.
- Bottled cold water throughout the day.

Bus and taxi figures are the ones we quote to guests who ask; they move with traffic and the time of day.
When to go: mornings, Fridays and the blue hour
The mosque is at its best early, before the coaches arrive and before the marble courtyard heats up — which is why the tour leaves Dubai at 8:00 AM. The other good window is the blue hour just after sunset, when the white domes turn violet against the reflecting pools; the mosque stays open into the evening, and the photos from that half hour are the ones people frame.
Fridays are different: the mosque is closed to tourists during the Friday prayers and opens to visitors in the afternoon, so a morning Friday visit does not work. During Ramadan hours change too. Whatever day you choose, check the official visitor hours the day before, and plan 1.5-2 hours on site if you go on your own — enough for the courtyard, the prayer hall with the world's largest hand-knotted carpet and the chandeliers.
What to bring, and what to leave at the hotel
Carry a physical or digital copy of your passport or Emirates ID — there are security checks — plus sunscreen and sunglasses, because the courtyard is open marble under a strong sun. Abu Dhabi can run 2-3 degrees hotter than Dubai; on the tour bottled water is provided, on your own bring some.
Leave big luggage behind: large suitcases are not permitted in the tour vehicles, and they are a nuisance at the mosque security. If you are visiting on the day you fly out, drop the bags at your Dubai hotel first and collect them after the tour returns in the evening.
